What Are the Benefits of Clear Braces?

They are the same size and shape as their stainless steel cousins and provide the same terrific results, but they are less visually evident so you’ll have a clearer and cleaner smile. These brackets are made from one of two materials: polychristalline, which results in tooth-colored brackets for patients with some coloring in their smiles, and monochrystalline alumina, which is more translucent and designed for whiter and lighter teeth. The monochrystalline brackets are also sometimes referred to as “sapphire” braces. These compounds have superior physical strength to match their pleasant aesthetic properties. Since they are non-porous materials, they are resistant to staining and they do not absorb odors when properly maintained. These clear brackets are slightly larger than metal ones, but this isn’t an issue for most patients since they blend in with teeth.
Clear braces use clear or white ligatures – little rubber bands — to hold the archwires in place on each bracket and to guide teeth in a particular direction along the gumline, depending on individual needs. These clear ligatures can stain slightly over time from foods with strong colors, but they are changed at every regularly scheduled maintenance adjustment to maintain the necessary pressure and appearance. So go ahead and enjoy all the curry, coffee and mustard that you like!
Patients can also opt for wires in silver or they can go with frosted or “esthetic” (white) versions to make the braces even less conspicuous when paired with translucent or tooth-colored brackets. You can improve your smile with nary a hint of wearing braces at all!
