Supernumerary teeth, referred to as hyperdontia, are simply extra teeth in the mouth. This condition is fairly uncommon and is seen more frequently with permanent teeth than baby teeth and, in most cases, may not cause problems. Symptoms of Hyperdontia

Supernumerary teeth generally don’t cause symptoms and can be observed over time to ensure they are not causing problems. If they begin to cause pain, our doctor will evaluate each case and make recommendations for surgery, extraction, or braces. 

Causes of Supernumerary Teeth

There is a genetic component to growing extra teeth and they may simply be caused by the shape of the hard tissues in the mouth and jaw as well as the shape and size of the teeth themselves. However, they can be a symptom of another disorder, like cleft palate, or an indicator of a genetic syndrome. Your doctor will be able to diagnose and help determine if a genetic syndrome is the cause. 

Common Issues and Treatments

If extra teeth start causing dental problems, they can manifest as:

• Crowding of the teeth (if there is not enough room for the extra teeth in the mouth)
• Displacement of surrounding teeth
• Misaligned bite
• Delay or failure of permanent teeth to erupt
• Nasal cavity eruption
• Toothaches
